Mattress Toppers: The Cheapest Real Fix, and When It Will Not Work
A topper is the most misunderstood product in the bedroom. Used correctly it is the highest-value purchase in this whole category. Used to paper over a worn-out mattress it is money thrown away, and it will make the problem worse.
The one rule. A topper changes the surface you lie on. It cannot change the support underneath. If your spine is held level and the surface is wrong, a topper is the right answer. If your hips sag, buy a mattress.
The 60-second diagnostic
Strip the bed to the bare mattress. Lie on your side in your normal position and have someone photograph you from behind, at bed height.
If your spine runs in a straight horizontal line and your complaint is a sore shoulder, a numb arm, or that it simply feels too hard — the support is fine and a topper will fix it.
If your hips are visibly lower than your shoulders, or you can see a dip in the mattress surface with nobody on it, the support has gone. A topper placed on a sagging mattress follows the sag and adds a soft layer to it, which makes alignment worse rather than better. That is the case where people report a topper “did nothing” or “made my back worse” — it did exactly what it was going to do.
Which material for which problem
| Material | Fixes | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Latex | Too firm, pressure points, hot sleeping | Expensive and heavy. The best all-round option. |
| Reflex / open-cell foam | Too firm, without the heat penalty of memory | Less contouring than memory. Good compromise. |
| Memory foam | Shoulder and hip pressure, partner movement | Sleeps warm. Get density, not just thickness. |
| Wool | Night sweats, clamminess, mild softening | Buffers humidity better than anything synthetic. |
| Down / feather | Adding a soft plush surface | Compacts and needs shaking out; not for allergy sufferers. |
| Polyester / microfibre | Very little, briefly | Compacts within months. Cheapest for a reason. |
| Gel-infused foam | Pressure relief, slightly cooler than plain memory | The gel effect fades over the night. Not a cooling fix. |
Getting the thickness right
- 2-3cm. Adds a surface feel. Will not change firmness meaningfully. Mostly useful for wool and protection.
- 4-5cm. The useful range for most people. Enough to soften a hard mattress or relieve shoulder pressure without lifting you off the support.
- 7-8cm. A substantial change. Only sensible over a genuinely firm mattress — over a medium one you will lose the support you paid for.
- Over 8cm. You are effectively sleeping on a thin mattress placed on another mattress. Rarely the right answer, and fitted sheets will not stay on.
Density matters more than thickness for foam. A 5cm topper at 50kg/m³ will outperform and outlast an 8cm one at 25kg/m³, and the cheap one will have flattened permanently inside a year.

Egyptian Linens
Approved US bedding partner. Compare fibre, weave, fitted-sheet depth and care instructions rather than relying on thread count alone.
Bella Maison
Approved partner for bedding and home textiles when the mattress is fine but the layers around it need attention.
SweetNight
Approved for US shoppers comparing mattresses, pillows, cooling bedding and selected bed frames. Check the exact product trial and return terms.
Practical things nobody mentions
- Buy deeper fitted sheets. A 5cm topper needs a 35cm-depth fitted sheet. Standard sheets will pop off the corners nightly and you will hate it.
- Put the protector over the topper, not under it. Under it, the topper is unprotected and unwashable.
- Expect off-gassing for a few days. New foam smells. Air it out of the bedroom for 24-48 hours before use.
- Latex is heavy. A king-size latex topper is a genuinely awkward two-person object. Worth knowing before delivery day.
- Rotate it monthly for the first few months. Foam takes a set, and rotating spreads it out.
Common questions
Will a topper fix a sagging mattress?
No, and it will usually make alignment worse. A topper follows the contour underneath it. A sagging mattress needs replacing.
How long does a mattress topper last?
High-density foam or latex, roughly 5 years. Low-density foam, 1-3. Polyester and microfibre, under a year before it compacts. Density is the variable.
Can I put a topper on a brand new mattress?
You can, but consider whether you bought the wrong firmness. Most new mattresses have a trial period, and exchanging it is a better outcome than spending again to correct it.
Memory foam or latex topper?
Latex if you sleep hot or want to be able to move easily; memory foam if pressure relief is the whole point and heat is not an issue. Latex costs more and lasts longer.
Do toppers help with partner movement?
A dense foam or latex topper absorbs some surface movement, which helps a bit. It cannot compensate for an open-coil spring unit underneath, because the movement travels through the springs.
