Quick Sleep Fixes Worth Trying First
Not every uncomfortable night requires a new mattress. Try the reversible, inexpensive fixes first and watch what actually changes.
When the bed feels too warm
Swap one layer at a time. A breathable sheet cannot compensate for a heavy waterproof protector and dense duvet, so begin with the layer closest to your skin. Lower the room temperature, increase airflow and test lighter bedding for several nights before judging the mattress.
When firmness feels wrong
Check the support underneath the mattress. Wide gaps, a bowed foundation or missing center legs can imitate mattress sagging. If the base is sound, a topper may soften a surface, but it rarely repairs a mattress with a deep structural dip.
When pillows create tension
Pillow height should fill the space between head and mattress without pushing the neck up or letting it fall. Side sleepers generally need more loft than front sleepers. Fold a towel to test small height changes before buying several pillows.
Keep a short sleep note
For one week, record bedtime comfort, wake-ups, heat and morning soreness. Change only one major variable at a time. The pattern will tell you more than a first impression in a showroom.
