Mattress Toppers: When They Work and When They Are a Waste of Money
Mattress toppers deserves a clear, practical explanation. Toppers occupy a strange position in bedding: genuinely transformative in some situations, completely pointless in others, and sold identically for both. The difference comes down to one question — is your mattress the wrong feel, or is it worn out?
The short answer. A topper changes the surface, not the support. If your mattress is structurally sound but too firm, too hot or too bland, a topper fixes it for a fraction of a replacement. If it sags, dips or has lost its shape, a topper sits in the dip with you and changes nothing.
Mattress toppers: The test that decides it
Strip the bed and look along the surface at eye level from the foot end. Then press down firmly in the middle and at the edges and see how quickly it comes back. A visible dip of more than about 3cm, or areas that stay compressed, means the support core has gone. No topper fixes that, and anyone who sells you one for that purpose is taking your money.
| Your complaint | Topper will help? | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Too firm | Yes — this is the main use case | — |
| Sleeps hot | Yes, if you pick latex or wool | — |
| Visible sag or dip | No | Replace the mattress |
| Partner movement wakes you | Partly — a foam topper damps some | Foam or hybrid mattress |
| Too soft | Rarely — most toppers add softness | Firm topper or new mattress |
| Edges collapse | No | Replace the mattress |
| Old and dusty | No — that is hygiene, not comfort | Protector, or replace |
Which material for which problem
- Memory foam — best pressure relief, worst for heat. Good if you are cold and sore.
- Latex — responsive rather than sinking, sleeps much cooler, lasts longest. Expensive.
- Wool — regulates temperature in both directions, adds cushioning rather than contouring. Excellent on a firm mattress.
- Feather and down — luxurious for a fortnight, then it flattens and needs shaking daily. Skip unless you enjoy the ritual.
- Polyester fibre — cheap, adds a little softness, compresses within months.
Thickness
Under 5cm changes the feel slightly. Around 5 to 7cm is where a topper genuinely alters how a mattress sleeps. Over 8cm and you start fighting your fitted sheet and losing the mattress’s own support characteristics — at that point you have effectively bought a thin mattress and put it on top of a thick one.
Getting the material right
The Foam People make toppers in memory foam, latex and open-cell constructions in a range of depths, which matters because the material decides whether you solve the firmness problem or create a heat one.

Keeping it in place
The most common complaint about toppers is that they migrate. Elasticated corner straps help; a deep fitted sheet stretched over both topper and mattress helps more. If you have a topper that slides every night, it is almost always because the fitted sheet is not deep enough to hold both layers together.
For a firm mattress you otherwise like
A natural-fibre topper adds cushioning without the heat penalty of foam, and lasts considerably longer than a synthetic one. White Lotus Home make wool and cotton toppers in the depths that actually change how a mattress sleeps.
